Freelance opportunities

    Work withIntellium.

We are a Cape Town web design studio building websites and Shopify stores for South African small businesses. We are putting together a list of freelancers we can call on when a project lands.

To be upfront: these are not salaried jobs. We work project to project. If that suits you, we would rather meet you now than scramble when the next brief comes in.

    How we work

    Read this before the roles.

    01

    Project to project

You quote per project or per hour. We agree scope and timeline upfront, then you build. No retainers, no unpaid standby.

    02

    We keep it lean

Free apps and plugins over paid ones wherever possible. Our clients are small businesses on tight budgets, and every monthly subscription is money out of their pocket.

    03

    We build for handover

Every site ships with a handover document so the owner can manage their own products and content. Big structural changes come back to us. Day to day running should not.

    04

    We stay available after launch

For the first two weeks after a site goes live we are on hand for the client. We need you reachable in that window too.

    05

    Fair on revisions

Small tweaks are part of the job. Scope changes get requoted. We will not leave you doing unpaid work forever, and we ask the same fairness back.

    06

    Briefed properly, paid on time

You get a written brief with what the client actually wants before you start. We do not haggle people down after the work is done.

    Open roles

    Three kinds of specialist.

    Freelance Shopify Designer / Developer

This is our biggest need right now.

    You should have

    • Real Shopify builds behind you, not one theme you edited once
    • Working knowledge of Shopify themes, sections and settings
    • The instinct to solve things with free apps before reaching for paid ones
    • Experience setting up products, collections, payments and delivery
    • The ability to set a store up so the owner can actually run it themselves

    Nice to have

    • SA payment gateways (PayFast, Yoco)
    • Email marketing setup (Klaviyo, Shopify Email, Mailchimp)
    • Analytics and conversion tracking
    • WordPress or front-end experience as well

    Freelance WordPress Developer

For client sites that are a better fit on WordPress than a custom build.

    You should have

    • Built and launched real WordPress sites, not just installed a theme
    • Comfort with page builders as well as working in the theme itself
    • The same lean mentality: free plugins over paid where it is sensible
    • Understanding of speed, hosting basics and keeping a site secure
    • The ability to hand a site over so the client can update their own pages

    Nice to have

    • WooCommerce
    • Migrations, host to host or platform to platform
    • On page SEO
    • Shopify or front-end experience as well

    Freelance Front-End / Full-Stack Developer

For custom builds that go beyond a template.

    You should have

    • Strong React. Our own site runs React 18, Vite, TypeScript and Tailwind CSS
    • Comfort building responsive layouts that hold up on a phone
    • Clean, readable code that another developer can pick up later
    • An eye for design, not just implementation

    Nice to have

    • Next.js, Astro or Vue
    • Back-end work: APIs, databases, authentication
    • Deployment (Cloudflare Pages, Vercel, Netlify)
    • WordPress or Shopify experience as well

These roles overlap on purpose. A Shopify developer who also knows WordPress is more useful to us than one who does not, and the same goes in every direction. If you cover more than one of the above, say so. It moves you up the list.

    How to apply

    Send us six things.

Email [email protected] with the subject line “Freelance — Shopify / WordPress / Front-End” and include:

    1. 1Where you are based. Your country and timezone.
    2. 2Links to work you have built. Live URLs, not screenshots.
    3. 3Your rate. Per hour or per project, whichever you prefer to work on.
    4. 4Your typical timeframe. Roughly how long a standard build takes you.
    5. 5Your availability right now. Hours per week, and how soon you could start.
    6. 6Anything else you cover. If you span more than one of the roles above, say so.

We read every email. If there is a fit we will set up a short call, even if we do not have a project for you that week.

We are a small studio, not a big agency.

We pay on time, we brief properly, and we do not haggle people down after the fact. If you build good work and communicate well, we will keep coming back to you.
